Hypnosis Imaging
Hypnosis imaging is becoming very popular with doctors today. There have been many findings about hypnosis through the practice of imaging. Many of the findings include pain reduction, hallucinations, and more.
A brain acts very differently when a person is hypnotized rather than when a person is not. The use of hypnosis imaging is finding many differences. The use of hypnosis imaging is the use of an MRI on a patient while they are under hypnosis. The doctor will do a full brain scan and look at the different nerves and parts of the brain. The doctors will examine parts of the brain that feel pain, see colors, and how the brain is responding while under hypnosis.
Hypnosis imaging has shown that the reactors in the brain which cause a person to feel pain are not as active while a person is under hypnosis. This means that if a person is feeling severe abdominal pain and they are put under hypnosis, the activity in the brain is redirected to another function and the person is not feeling the pain. The top level of the brain is the part of the brain which is responsible for 'feeling' the pain. This area of the brain has a lower amount of activity while a person is under hypnosis.
Hypnosis imaging also showed the same brain activity in many patients under hypnosis in the anterior cingulated cortex. When patients were told a scenario not under hypnosis their brains showed a certain pattern. When the patients were put under hypnosis and told the same scenario their brains responded the same. When the patients were under hypnosis and told to imagine the scenario the brain showed no activity but 8 of the 10 patients experienced hallucinations.
It is also proven through hypnosis imaging that patients see colors when they normally would not. For instance, a hypnotized patient would look at something colorless and actually see colors. Patients also experienced situations where they were unable to make simple everyday decisions under hypnosis. Some patients who were very literate would look at a common English word and believe the word to be gibberish unable to sound it out or tell the doctors what the words were.
It has become evident to doctors that the brain reacts very differently when a person is under hypnosis. In some cases a patient might be extremely advanced and in others the person may lose all of their intellect and reasoning abilities. Hypnosis affects brains differently in different situations. Many people have benefit from hypnosis in situations of overcoming emotional traumatic events, pain reduction, and more. Today, the use of hypnosis is becoming questionable because of the evident altered state of mind patients are proving to be in with the use of imaging devices.
Hypnosis imaging is the analyzing of the brain while a patient is under hypnosis through the use of an MRI. This allows doctors to see the different ways the brain reacts or does not react under hypnosis when given different circumstances.
