4 Tips For Creating Powerful Outcomes
This is the first question I ask anyone before we even start a coaching session: "What do you want?" Such a straightforward question, and yet the most common answer I get is: "Not to have my problem anymore!". At that point, I say: "And that is exactly why you have it. So, what do you want?" Sometimes, this baffles people into a state beyond words or description. Why?
Well, the mind is a weird and wonderful thing filled with possibilities and resources for us. Yet, the one thing the mind is very bad at is processing negatives. If I asked you not to imagine a blue tree, a shiny bright blue tree with a star on top of it, so really don't think about the blue tree...what are you thinking about? The blue tree!!
It is the same with out goals. If I say what I do not want, then my mind takes this a cue that this is something I want, and will do whatever it can to get me this outcome. So, if I say "I don't want to smoke" then this will usually accentuated by the lighting of a cigarette. Hence, the first step in making any good goal is to state what you do want! Say it the way you want it, and you make it more likely that it will happen. So, what is it you want?
The next step is finding out when to stop. So many times, we make goals, and when we achieve them, never realize we have, and keep going. Once you achieve a goal, wouldn't it be nice to pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself? So, ask yourself, how will you know when you have it? What will your senses tell you that let you know, you have achieved what you wanted? The more senses you get on board with your goal, the more vivid and real it becomes. So use more than words, picture it, hear it, feel it, taste it and smell it!!
Once you have all your senses on board, you know what you will see, hear, feel, taste and smell that will let you know you have your outcome, fully experience it. What I mean by that is, let yourself imagine you have achieved it, and let that feeling wash all over you. And once you are in this great state, ask yourself: "What is the next smallest step I can take for getting my outcome?"
Many times people tend to say: "I know what I want, I want to be happy!" Well, happiness is a state, and as such you can have it when you read a funny joke, or someone makes you smile. But in the long term, it is not a goal! So, when you step into your goal, you start living in the state you get when you achieve your goal, and suddenly you will have the energy to make almost any goal happen for you!
In summary:
- Say what you want
- Ask yourself how you will know you have it
- Get all your senses on board
- Imagine having achieved it, and once you get that great feeling, plan the next smallest step you can take towards your outcome.
Without a clear idea of where you are going, how will you know when you are there, and why would it matter where you went? Make your goals powerfully compelling, and then success is guaranteed!
